Hudson County Freeholder Ray Velazquez is so offended by the governor's handling of his legal troubles and so worried that the gay community will be hurt by the scandal that he is publicly acknowledging that he, too, is a gay elected official. Most troubling, he said, is the allegation that Gov. James E. McGreevey put his lover on the public payroll.

Hudson County gay rights activists reacted with shock at yesterday's announcement by Gov. James E. McGreevey that he is gay and had engaged in an extramarital affair with another man, but said they were extremely disappointed by the governor's decision to resign in November.

In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man and announced his resignation yesterday. "My truth is that I am a gay American," he said with his wife by his side at a televised news conference.
