Scientists unravel coral reefs' secrets    view story

About 1,500 feet below the ocean's surface lies an unexplored territory that could hold the cure for troubling diseases or glimpses of previously unknown life forms. Unlike the Amazon rain forest, this mysterious territory is just 150 miles away. You can find it off the coast. That's where centuries-old coral reefs harbor strange secrets. A crew of 15 scientists exploring those mysteries made an unexpected stop in the Charleston area because of the effects of Hurricane Wilma to the south. They're spending two weeks studying coral reefs between Florida and North Carolina. The Life on the Edge mission is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This is the mission's sixth year, and scientists say they've barely made a dent |
