Democrats, divided over President Bush's handling of Iraq, are coming down hard on his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina. |

and Hitler improved Germany's economy...

Re: Tom Raum's 'reporting': "Bush cut short his vacation by two days last week to return to Washington. He has presided over daily meetings, visited stricken Gulf Coast areas twice and was expected to return soon. He has sent Cabinet members to the region; Vice President Dick Cheney planned to be there on Thursday."
What the hell is this crap? Have you no shame? No sense of honest reporting? Bush ignored the Hurricane during the first three crucial days, had a wildly unsuccessful photo-op visit 5 days late, and didn't recall his Vice President for close to 6 days. He didn't have daily meetings in the crucial period immediately before, during, or after Katrina. His much vaunted 'vacation' White House had no leadership. His VP, Secretary of State, Chief of Staff, and Karl Rove were all away on vacation...in most cases for close to a week after the La Governor had declared a State of Emergency. So....in the time of the biggest catastrophe in the US, the president remained on vacation for several days, and his VP finally expressed sympathy and interest 1 1/2 weeks after the devastation.

Vacation

David Remnick in the New Yorker called Bush's time off "a vacation so long that it would have shamed a French playboy."

Subject: Amtrak Offered Train
Comments: Officials at Amtrak say they offered to run a special train out of New Orleans that could have evacuated residents hours before Katrina struck - but city officials turned it down.

Let's make sure we have all this straight:

Local officials:

Refused Amtrak's offer!

Refused to use school buses to evacuate!

Refused to allow the Red Cross to bring food and water to the Superdome!

Did not protect its citizens in the Superdome!

Refused federal troops unless they swore allegiance to the LA Natl. Guard!

Refused to follow their OWN emergency plans!

Oh yeah - this is ALL Bush's fault!

Nobody said "this is ALL Bush's fault!" But he is responsible for the federal response, as well as every federal executive appointment.

"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at the White House. "And to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility."

The political and commercial morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet. ~ Mark Twain
