State bases to stay open     view story

Arizona emerged as neither a big national winner nor a big loser Friday as the Pentagon proposed that none of the state's five major military bases be shut down, even as 33 major installations in other states were targeted for closure. But the state would suffer less-dramatic "hits" under Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's proposed changes, including changes at Glendale's Luke Air Force Base that could lead to the loss of as many as 278 there and an additional 274 contractor or other jobs in the Valley tied to the base. |
