State's congressmen get an earful: Lobbyists procure pork for barrel of projects view story
Tuesday, April 19, 2005
Andrew Miga - - Boston Herald
| Dozens of Bay State colleges, hospitals, museums and businesses snared earmarked federal dollars - cash for pet projects that congressmen, often at the prodding of lobbyists, quietly tuck into larger spending bills without any debate.
To the small army of lobbyists and lawmakers able to muscle funds for favored special projects, such earmarks are a bonanza.
But to public watchdog groups wary of spiraling budget deficits, earmarks are a flagrant abuse of the legislative process because there is no public scrutiny of the projects.
